Tarzan’s weekly meal prep is a labor of love — one I look forward to because it keeps him healthy, satisfied, and strutting around like the happy, goofy boy he is. This recipe is simple, nourishing, and made with whole ingredients you can actually recognize.
I use my crockpot to cook most of it low and slow, then toss in extras like eggs and oats for texture and added nutrients. I skip the rice and instead use old-fashioned oats and kale to keep it fiber-rich and anti-inflammatory. And of course, I don’t forget his daily supplements — more on that below!
🛒 Ingredients (Makes ~22–24 Cups)
- 2 lbs ground beef
- 1 lb chicken gizzards and hearts (chopped or whole)
- 2 large zucchini
- 10 baby carrots
- 4 celery stalks (chopped)
- 4 cups kale (chopped, stems removed)
- 1.5 cups old-fashioned oats (uncooked)
- 6 hard-boiled eggs (chopped or sliced)
- Water to cover
✨ Daily Add-Ins (Added Fresh at Mealtime)
- Native Pet Omega Oil – A clean, anti-inflammatory omega-3 supplement Tarzan gets every day (follow dosage on bottle by weight)
- Dasuquin Joint Supplement – A vet-recommended joint supplement we give Tarzan daily (check with your vet for proper dosage)
- Optional: bone broth or kelp powder if your dog enjoys them or needs a boost!
🍲 Instructions
1. Slow Cook the Base:
Add the ground beef, chicken gizzards and hearts, zucchini, celery, carrots and kale to your crockpot. Add just enough water to cover the ingredients.
Cook on Low for 6–8 hours or High for 3–4 hours, until everything is soft and cooked through.
2. Boil the Eggs:
While the crockpot works its magic, boil your eggs. Let them cool, peel, and chop.
3. Add the Oats:
About 30 minutes before the crockpot is done, stir in the oats. Let them absorb the broth and soften up or you can boil separately and then add in.
4. Combine Everything:
Once the crockpot mixture has cooled slightly, fold in the chopped eggs. Mix until everything is evenly combined.
5. Add Supplements Fresh:
Do not mix the omega oil or joint supplements into the entire batch. Add them fresh to each serving to preserve nutrients and maximize benefits.
🧊 Storage Tips
- Refrigerate: Store up to 4 days in the fridge in a sealed container.
- Freeze: Portion the rest into individual servings and freeze. Thaw overnight in the fridge as needed.
💡 Final Notes
This recipe is flexible! You can sub out ingredients based on what your dog tolerates or prefers. Just be sure to consult your vet before switching up their diet or adding supplements. Every pup is different, and what works for Tarzan might need slight tweaks for yours.
