Tarzan is my big, lovable American Staffordshire Terrier, and like many bully breeds, he needs a little extra support when it comes to his joints, skin, and overall health. As he’s gotten older (he’s 4 years and 7 months now!), I’ve become more intentional about what goes into his bowl each day.
Here are the three supplements I mix into his food daily to help him stay strong, mobile, and thriving!
🦴 1. Omega-3 Oil
I add a pump of omega-3 oil for joint support, heart health, and a shiny coat. It’s a simple step that makes a big difference. Tarzan has some joint stiffness, and omega-3s help reduce inflammation while also supporting his skin and overall wellness.
🧂 2. Eggshell Calcium Powder
Since I sometimes prepare homemade food or mix in fresh toppers, I use eggshell calcium powder to make sure he’s getting enough calcium for his bones, teeth, and muscle health.
It’s natural, easy to measure, and helps balance out his meals when I’m not using complete kibble alone.
💊 3. Dasuquin Chew
About six months ago, I noticed Tarzan started limping on and off, especially after long walks or playtime. It was heartbreaking to watch him struggle, so after checking in with our vet, I started giving him Dasuquin, a joint support chew with glucosamine, MSM, and ASU to help protect his cartilage and improve mobility.
Instead of giving it as a chew, I cut it up and mix it into his food, just to make sure he gets every bit of it — he’s picky sometimes and doesn’t always go for it whole.
Why I Do This
I see supplements as a small daily act of love. They’re not about being “extra”, they’re about being proactive. Tarzan means the world to me, and this routine gives me peace of mind knowing I’m supporting his long-term health, especially now that we’re managing his joint issues.
If you’re thinking of adding supplements to your dog’s meals, always check with your vet first. Every pup is different, and what works for Tarzan might look a little different for your furry friend.
