If you’ve ever looked over at your dog and wondered “How are you asleep again?” — you’re not alone. Dogs spend a lot of their day resting, and honestly, it’s one of my favorite things to watch.
The other day I took a close-up photo of Tarzan when he was getting sleepy. His eyes were half closed and his face had that relaxed look that only happens when a dog is completely comfortable. Moments like that remind me how important rest is for dogs.
At our house, Tarzan and Cora have a pretty active routine, which is why those naps are so well earned.
Our Daily Routine
Both dogs usually get two walks or outings a day. Sometimes it’s a neighborhood walk, and other days it might be a little adventure somewhere new. They also have access to the yard, where they love to sunbathe and relax outside.
Sunbathing is actually one of Tarzan’s favorite activities. If there’s a sunny spot in the yard, he will find it and stretch out like he owns the place.
Mental Stimulation Matters Too
It’s not just physical exercise that helps dogs relax — mental enrichment is huge.
Tarzan and Cora both get interactive toys like KONGs and puzzle toys. These help keep their minds busy and give them something productive to focus on. They also have Benebone chew toys, which are great for relieving stress and giving them something safe to chew.
Chewing is a natural behavior for dogs and it helps them decompress. After a good chew session, Tarzan usually ends up finding a comfortable spot and drifting off into a nap.
Nutrition Plays a Role
Another big part of their routine is their homemade diet. Making their meals allows me to focus on balanced ingredients and good nutrition. When dogs are getting the nutrients they need, it supports their energy levels during the day and their ability to fully relax and recover during rest.
Why Dogs Sleep So Much
Dogs actually sleep 12–14 hours a day on average, and sometimes even more depending on their age, size, and activity level.
For dogs like Tarzan and Cora, all the physical exercise, mental stimulation, and good nutrition helps them settle down and recharge. Those sleepy faces we see during the day are just their way of recovering and getting ready for the next walk, chew toy session, or backyard sunbath.
And honestly, seeing Tarzan peacefully asleep might be one of the best parts of my day.
